I visited a privileged place in Madrid, the hill of the poplars, the exhibition attracted knowledge passenger curated by Diego Star in the Residencia de Estudiantes. At the entrance heard a great sound installation, water memory of Juan Manuel Artero , which recreates the sound of voices could be caught in the water channel that cuts through the gardens. The beginning promises a happy trip.
But in the pavilion installing the liner becomes nineteenth insisting on a romantic view of art and learning where the prevailing concept of genius and creative individual.
The exhibition is a journey where geographers, archaeologists, anthropologists, adventurers, to discover other civilizations of Western civilization.
I was struck by the use of photography. The list of works and documents exhibited is clarifying the place given to photography: art works, photographs, documents, books, archaeological and anthropological research.
not appear regarded photography as document or as an object, or as a work of art. The picture seems to be something else, are taking a picture. I understand all the modesty that can be used to use photography as a documentary source of reality, because it is creating its own interpretation of reality, in this case, the intrepid Western travelers, without losing rigidity or tie, the approaches to study unknown.
not agree with the treatment given to photographs that show exposure.
The photo album of Leo Frobenius of his expeditions in Africa is one of the jewels photo enclosed in glass cases. On the journey, magic from our earliest childhood, dedicated to Howard Carter and the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, all images belong to the photographer Harry Burton (1879-1940), which form part of the Egyptian expedition of the Metropolitan Museum since 1924 documented the entire process of excavation, being treated as an innovator of archaeological photography.
Just the nature of exposure makes it impossible to rescue the power of these images, not to overshadow the rest of the documentary material, but the only thing left on my trip retina are those old pictures.
